Brooke Thurber put an exclamation point on the first-ever tournament for the UW-Stevens Point women’s wrestling team as she earned an individual title at 116 pounds.
Thurber topped teammate Abby Nelson by technical fall in the finals of the Adrian College Open Saturday in Adrian, Michigan.
It was a short day at the office for Thurber who spent just 4:54 on the mat over the course of her three matches. She cruised to a championship with a pair of technical falls and a pin.
Thurber and Nelson combined for 32 of the Pointers 34.5 team points.
UWSP finished sixth at the seven-team event.
Lakeland University finished seventh in the season-opening tournament. The Muskies were led by Madison Ruckdashel who placed third at 123 pounds.
After being pinned in the semifinals, Ruckdashel rallied for back-to-back wins to capture a spot on the podium.
She pinned Morgan Bethea of UW-Stevens Point 1:34 into their consolation semifinal match. Ruckdashel finished the day by pinning Heavynne Jerez (MacMurray College) in the third-place match in just 1:09.
Lakeland resumes action Nov. 2 at the MacMurray College Open.
UWSP is off until Nov. 13 when it hosts Lakeland in its first-ever dual.
