A pair of individual champions lifted the UW-Whitewater wrestling team to a second-place finish at the 34-team Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational in Wheaton, Illinois.
The two-day event is, essentially, the NCAA Division III equivalent of the Midlands Championships.
Mike Tortorice (125 pounds) and Hazen Rice (141) each won their weight classes for the Warhawks.
Tortorice defeated Andrew Perelka (John Carroll University) by major decision 9-0 in their championship match.
Rice bested Jarrod Brezovec (John Carroll University) 8-6 in their title tilt.
Jarrit Shinhoster (174) also represented Whitewater in the finals, but he fell Cornell Beachem (Mount Saint Joseph) 3-1 and had to settle for a runner-up showing.
In total, the Warhawks had five place-winners.
Nick Sundberg placed third at 197 and Dylan Uzumecki was eighth at 285.
Whitewater finished the event with 111 team points, 9.5 shy of team champion North Central (Ill.)
UW-Eau Claire finished fourth in the team race with 97 points.
James Huntley led the Blugolds with a runner-up finish at 197 pounds.
Huntley dropped the championship match by a 7-2 decision.
UWEC had five additional place winners.
Evan Lawrence (174) finished third, while Jake Drexler (149) and Chase Schmidt (165) each placed fifth at their respective weights.
Tyler Demo (141) and Noah Carter (285) took sixth.
UW-Stevens Point finished 11th as a team.
The Pointers were paced by 133-pound champion Matt Berlin who accounted for 20 of his team’s 60 points.
Berlin defeated David Massey (Mount Union) 4-2 in the finals.
Jordan Weinzetl finished third at 165 for the Pointers, while Brandon Peckham took eighth at 157.
Four place-winners lifted UW-Oshkosh to a 12th-place finish.
Colten Cashmore paced the Titans with a fourth-place showing at 197 pounds.
Denis Murphy took fifth at 125 for UWO, while Jordan Lemcke finished fifth at 285 and AJ Schoenfuss was seventh at 133.
UW-Platteville tied for 13th.
Lucius Rinehart led the charge with a runner-up finish at 285.
Rinehart suffered his first loss of the season in the title bout when he fell to Drew Kasper (Otterbein University) 4-0.
Isaac Wiegel (125) and Nick Dado (174) also placed for the Pioneers.
Dado was fourth and Wiegel finished eighth.
Helton Vandenbush led MSOE with a seventh-place showing at 184 pounds. His teammate Drew Matticks was eighth at 174.
As a team, the Raiders recorded a 27th-place finish.
Marco Padilla (125) was the lone place-winner for Concordia University. He finished seventh at his weight.
The Falcons finished 29th as a team.
